Art at Guildhall Winchester

The art on display in Guildhall Winchester is owned by Winchester City Council and cared for by the museums service. Although the majority of the pictures in the art collection are topographical, some of the oldest are portraits of local gentry and civic dignitaries such as mayors.

The oldest works on display date from the early 17 Century. It is not known by what means many of the works came into the collection but some were donated by benefactors and family members of the subjects.

Old photos of Guildhall Winchester show that some of the pictures still hang in the same room as they did over 100 years ago!
